MODELING
MISTAKES 101
Craigslist
Follies
New model
wants a free portfolio with a TFP offer
On May 7, 2009, we saw the
following post on the Tampa Craigslist. Often a source of great humor
for professional models and photographers, Craigslist, because it is a
free service, allows any idiot with a computer to post an ad. This one
was more assuming, and naive, than stupid, but it needed a response. We
have it one.
Amateur Model Seeking
Work
I am trying to
break into the field of modeling. I am 21 young and willing to learn.
I have a few shots i've already taken with a photographer but Im trying
to turn this into some sort of career. I have pics i can send when requested!
So if anyone has any gigs or just needs help with their portfolio let
me know! thanks!

Bay Modeling Responds:
Aspiring
model, with all due respect, you need to INVEST in your modeling career
in order to "break" into the field of modeling.
Although most of the photographers who "advertise" here are
amateurs themselves, and can do little more for you than waste your time
(or worse), there are a few talented professional photographers on here.
The only issue is that you won't get a professional photographer to shoot
you free of charge and give you a free modeling portfolio. If a photographer
offers to shoot you free of charge, they are not a professional photographer,
don't have a clue about running a business, and won't be able to give
you what you need. They may also have other motives which are not in your
best interest, may try to exploit you, or may simply be dangerous creeps
out to meet young girls by claiming to be a photographer.
I wince at the thought of the types of so-called "photographers"
who are contacting you.
Oh, yes, and don't allow anyone to shoot nudes, or "glamour"
photographs of you, unless that it the type of modeling that you want
to "specialize" in. If you are tricked into doing this, it may
undermine your ability to do mainstream modeling or to become the face
of a well-known company (no one is going to want your face to help market
their product or service if you have tacky nudes all over your portfolio).
Nudes are to be taken very seriously, should only be done with the most
reputable professional photographers (who have a long list of references
and contacts), and are the domain of professional models only; models
who have the experience to know what they are doing, and who can negotiate
the riskier modeling work.
Also, if you are in the market for modeling portfolio work, book a photographer
who specializes in it. Commercial photographers may be fine, as they are
used to working with models, and will know how to shoot a marketable portfolio.
As a rule of thumb (and this comes from the experience of many models
who have paid their dues, and who know from experience), avoid
wedding photographers and event photographers. It's a different
type of photography, and they won't be able to give you what you
need. Shooting models, and creating effective modeling portfolios
and composite cards, it much harder to do, and much more specialized.
Still want a modeling portfolio for free? Good luck! TFP / TFCD
was never supposed to be a way to obtain a free portfolio. It
is supposed to be a collaboration / even wash, where experienced
professional photographers and experienced professional
models get together and exchange services. Normally,
both parties get paid for what they do, but in that case, they both have
the professional experience to offer and the collaboration is free because
they cancel each other out. In those rare cases, each of them
already have portfolios and are not in the market to have one done.
They help each other out to add to their existing portfolio, and to network,
and that's how that actually works.
If you are in the market for a professional modeling portfolio,
you will have to pay for it. You cannot start any career for
free, especially one as competitive as modeling.
Oh, and when selecting a photographer, make sure that they are a professional.
Check their references as well as their investment into their own career.
Do not book a photographer who has a portfolio built by doing TFP's with
aspiring models, as TFP used to build a profession is much like the blind
leading the blind. The photographer did not make an investment into their
career, and, like models with professional photographers, photographers
need to pay professional models to build a professional photography portfolio.
Also, make sure that the photographer has invested in professional business
resources. Make sure that they have an occupational license, that they
operate from a professionally designed web site (no cheapo flash-template
web sites like many wedding photographers use), and do not run
a business from a freebie web 2.0 profile on Myspace,
Facebook, or on one of those portfolio networking
web sites (which are full of amateur photographers and models).
Look at their marketing, too. Are their ads merely a bunch of words thrown
up on Craigslist, or are they professionally designed and copywritten?
As a model, you will only be taken as seriously as the modeling jobs that
you do, as well as the professional investment that you show in your modeling
portfolio and composite cards. As a photographer, they are only as professional
as the amount of investment that they show in their portfolio and business
resources. If a photographer operates from a portfolio made by
doing free shoots, and operates from a throw-away profile, they are much
more likely to be unprofessional or unethical. There is no professional
accountability when you can simply pull anchor and start another "business"
with another freebie profile, name, and free portfolio when they "mess
up".
You will only be taken as seriously as the investment that you make in
your career.
Hope this helps, and helps you avoid the mistakes that many people make
when they start their careers.

web site. I have the top models in the Tampa Bay market as my references,
as they are also my friends, and they will agree with everything that
I have written.
