The modeling agency way is no longer the only way to have a professional modeling career, and agency representation is no longer required for modeling. Many models find, and book, modeling jobs on their own, independently, cutting out the middleman and saving money by not going through an agency. Models, please be careful when dealing with modeling agencies, and keep in mind that you don't need them to represent you in order to have a professional modeling career. Modeling and talent agencies work FOR you, and that's it; they should be used as one of many sources of modeling jobs. It is a mistake for models to depend and rely solely on modeling and talent agencies to find work. It is is mistake to allow any modeling agency to manage your career, especially when they work for your competition, who are other models which the agency represents. You can find and book your own modeling jobs on your own, without going through a modeling agency. This said, smart models use several modeling agencies as a source of potential modeling jobs in addition to other sources. In our qualified opinion:
1. Models should obtain a modeling portfolio and comp cards before going to any modeling agency.
2. Models should never allow any modeling agency to manage them, as it is a conflict of interest.
The official Tampa Bay Modeling opinion about Tampa Bay modeling agencies: With the independent modeling movement of the past few years making substantial progress, modeling and talent agencies are no longer required in order to have a professional modeling career. Many top models book modeling jobs and work on their own, only using modeling agencies as one of many sources of modeling jobs. In our opinion, to avoid the possibility of conflicts of interest and modeling agency scams, never buy any service offered by a modeling and talent agency. Florida modeling agencies can only make money by obtaining modeling jobs for models, and by referring models into jobs, and that's it (please see our Florida modeling agency laws section to learn about state regulations and penalties governing modeling and talent agencies. EVERY PROFESSIONAL MODEL owes it to themselves to learn these regulations, as agencies work for the models. Knowledge is power.). Models should obtain a modeling portfolio, modeling composite cards, and their modeling career tools BEFORE going to any modeling agency (we do not care what the biased, backwards, old-modeling industry modeling books tell you- go to any agency without a modeling portfolio or composite cards, and you will be at risk for being scammed. Follow the advice given in some of those modeling books, and you will play right into the hands of modeling photography scams and modeling agency photo mill scams. Agencies have no business referring models to photographers or portfolio services, and on this point the modeling books are wrong, in our educated, qualified, and experienced opinion). Additionally, never buy services from any modeling portfolio photographer or modeling services recommended or referred by a modeling agency; avoid all of these leads, and find photography and other services on your own. Not only is it against the law, but it is both a conflict of interest and unethical for any modeling agency to sell services to models when they should be working for models by finding jobs for them. In our opinion, also, models should never allow any modeling agency to manage their careers; agencies work for the models, and not the other way around. Additionally, models should never sign an exclusive representation agreement with any modeling agency; the model should obtain representation from several modeling agencies to maximize the modeling jobs possibilities and force the agencies to compete with each other. :
Hillsborough County Modeling Agencies - The foundation of the Tampa Bay modeling industry, the top modeling and talent agencies in the bay area are in Hillsborough county. Modeling agencies such as Benz and Alexa are here; both Alexa and Benz are the top Tampa Bay modeling and talent agencies, and both are SAG (although some of us wish that the original Dott Burns Talent Agency was still around, as this agency is legendary, and was the best back in the 1980's).
Pinellas County Modeling Agencies - The heart of the Tampa Bay modeling industry, Pinellas County has the largest population of professional models, photographers, and others in the bay area modeling industry.
Manatee County Modeling Agencies - A nice little Florida modeling haven can be found in Manatee County, although it's slower than the Tampa Bay metro areas. Still, Pinellas County, the heart of the Tampa Bay modeling industry, is only a short trip away on the Sunshine Skyway.
Sarasota County Modeling Agencies - A slow Tampa Bay modeling market, Sarasota is near busier south Florida modeling industry markets. Like Manatee County, it's not far from the Sunshine Skyway, either, which leads to Tampa Bay modeling mecca Pinellas County. Beware of killer lizards on the beaches.
Polk County Modeling Agencies - A backwards-stick county better known for crime and meth labs than for modeling (reminds us of Hillsborough County's Ybor City, the crime and modeling scam capital of Tampa), Polk County is close to Orlando, at least, and Interstate 4 is a lifeline to central Florida's largest modeling industry market, Orlando, Winter Park, and Orange County (See our sister site Florida Modeling Career for more about Orange County).
Pasco County Modeling Agencies - Close to all the best Tampa Bay Modeling markets, Pasco county has few modeling and talent agencies. It's better to go to Tampa.
