Identified by our model scam researchers in April 2006, this type of scam is what we have termed the outer “skin” of all model scams. These are all about the scam faking it before they make it. Another form of this scam is where the liar pads their resume and embellishes their qualifications and experience. Pretense Scams are basically about promoting misconceptions in an effort to enhance marketing and trick people into working with the perpetrator. The con artist will drop the names of professionals, charities, and well known companies in their pitches and marketing material. They will either claim to be associated with these names or imply that they are. This is why it is so important to check out all references. Pretense scams become outright misrepresentation and fraud when the con artist does this in the course of business. Fraud is a serious crime. Scams listed here are not limited to models, and different types can be easily combined for new types of scams. If you cannot CLARIFY their intentions and VERIFY their references, go somewhere else to do business. It's professionally responsible to do so and lowers your risk. There are lots of great companies out there, like our advertisers and the companies in our resource sections, who are not scams. You owe it to your career to shop around and be selective.
