Photograph by Tampa photographer C. A. Passinault.Image four of our online portfolio of another Tampa model. This photograph, if we are not mistaken, was taken on location in the Tampa Bay area. The best modeling portfolio photographs are location shots. This is another great picture. This is the fifth model photograph on Tampa Bay Modeling. Pictures featured in our thumbnail array may not be the same as those of models which are in our featured model section, but often, they are one and the same.Unmatched in any Florida modeling market. The quality of this image is excellent! Photograph by C. A. Passinault, our resident photographer and modeling expert.Another top Tampa model gets their look on. The best models can obtain a wide range of looks, as you can see when you look at other pictures of this model! Is it any wonder why more and more companies and art directors are booking independent models without going through an agency? Proof that you can be a professional model, with a lucrative career, without being dependent upon an agency to find and book modeling jobs!Another awesome photograph of a Tampa model by modeling photographer C. A. Passinault, lead photographer Aurora PhotoArts, and director of Tampa Bay Modeling. For modeling portfolio work in the Tampa Bay area, nothing beats location work. Studio photography is not nearly as cost effective, or appropriate, for modeling portfolio work.Keep in mind that this picture, for a modeling portfolio, was taken by a qualified modeling portfolio photographer, C. A. Passinault, for a specialized, professional market, which is modeling. A wedding photographer or a portrait studio will not be able to give models what they need for an effective modeling portfolio, as you have to know what you are doing! This is the 12th picture in our Tampa Bay Modeling online portfolio. Yet another Tampa model shows a marketable look in their portfolio. The best models are capable of the most looks, and are not locked into a single look!Agency model or independent model? It doesnt matter, anymore, especially in Tampa Bay. Professional models like this one can be booked without going through an agency, saving both the model and the job agency fees.Modeling portfolios need at least six looks, and by looks, we mean different looks. A composite cards needs at least five, on average, with a headshot on the front, and four different looks on the back of the comp card. This Tampa model is demonstrating a marketable look right now, in this photography. Picture by C. A. Passinault.

Modeling Composite Cards

By C. A. Passinault, lead Tampa photographer and Tampa graphic designer, Aurora PhotoArts Tampa Bay photography and design.

Zed Cards And Other Common Names For Comp Cards
There are some of you who may be wondering what a zed card is. A zed card is another name for a composite card. Composite cards are also referred to as simply comp cards. That's all you need to know about the different names that these cards have, although there are many others (and no, "comp" is not short for "compensate" or "compensation", either; composite cards are often referred to as a "comp", or "comps").

Layout and Design of your Modeling Comps
The layout and design of your modeling composite cards should be clean and easy to read, never with too much clutter or clashing elements which distract the eye from the modeling photographs on the card. Mush like an ideal modeling portfolio picture, there should be a subject (the model pictures) and a composition which emphasizes the subject. This is why some of the best modeling composite card designers are also some of the best modeling portfolio photographers. If the photographer takes poor modeling portfolio pictures, like most wedding photographers do, then it is likely that they will do a poor job at designing composite cards.
If the composite card is too busy in design and looks like those tacky nightclub fliers which fill your Myspace mail inbox, the composite card will be less effective as a modeling marketing tool. Keep it simple, with clean lines and a clean layout, and let the pictures do the selling without the distractions.
Another thing which needs to be said about the design of modeling composite cards is to leave a blank area where modeling agencies can place their agency sticker. The smart model would never allow their agency name to be printed on their composite cards. As modeling agencies are only useful as one of many sources of modeling jobs, and they have no business trying to manage the career of any model, there needs to be a place for that sticker. If the model is represented by modeling agencies, each agency would receive a number of composite cards and would place their agency sticker on the cards.
Agencies? I have a couple of points to bring up about modeling agencies, and both have to do with the quality of the cards and the number ordered. Read on.

Modeling Agency Comp Cards
The majority of modeling composite cards floating around in the industry are cheap laser cards. These laser cards are referred to the models by the modeling agency, and often have the modeling agency name printed on them. Other modeling agencies, if they obtain the card, simply place their agency stickers over the name of the original modeling agency printed on the composite cards, but keep in mind that this may annoy them. Smart models never make waves when they do not have to, and modeling agencies have no business knowing who the other modeling agencies who represent them are.
We disagree with the practice of using cheap laser cards, as it is outdated, however the cheap quality of the laser composite cards does open opportunities for the smart models who compete against the models who use the cheap cards. especially if the model is smart enough to invest in professional quality composite cards and refuses to use laser composite cards.
In the old days, it was difficult for models to book work on their own, and most needed agencies. A lot has changed. Models no longer have to depend upon a modeling agency, and they have many different choices available to them. The days of the cheap laser cards are over because the model no longer has to accept them or the bad advice that an agent will give to them. Read on, smart models.

NEXT: THE MYTHS OF COMPOSITE CARDS

C. A. Passinault, who writes the Tampa Photography Blog, is a Tampa photographer who is a modeling composite card and actor headshot expert, and has done them for many years. These comp cards and headshots have proven to be effective in large markets such as New York and Los Angeles.
