Selective
Ignorance.
This is something that has been bugging me and it has to be said. Today,
I will voice my opinion about selective ignorance in the modeling industry
and why so many naive models seem to fall for obvious model scams, sleazy
model photographers, lying model consultants, and unethical model and
talent agencies in the Tampa Bay area.
The information is right here. It really is, and it doesn’t cost
a cent! The models here at Tampa Bay Modeling work very hard to put information
and career tools on this web site so models can become educated professionals
and avoid being ripped off, misled, exploited, lied to, molested, or worse.
There seem to be some out there who relish a life of ignorance, however,
and it really is their fault if they get taken.
What is selective ignorance? Is it downright stupidity or professional
negligence? Well, many of these models who are scammed are not stupid.
They just don’t know any better. They don’t do their homework
and blindly go through the industry hoping that they will be “discovered”
and guided by professional people. While experience is always a good way
to learn something, it can often burn you or hurt you badly if you really
don’t know what you are doing. You simply cannot trust anyone in
the modeling industry, either, until they have earned your trust. Many
models who handicap their careers are new models who choose to be selective
ignorant and who listen to the wrong people. Many of these people are
only out to take the money from people who don’t know any better.
Are models really as stupid as the stereotype? Those that don’t
bother to study and learn about the modeling industry are. While I personally
don’t mind models who don’t want to learn a profession and
limit their careers because it makes me look better as a model, as a professional
I have to realize that ignorant models hurt the industry, help scams stay
in business, and make it tougher overall to advance your career due to
the stereotypes that are reinforced. This is why we work so hard on this
site. We realize that by helping other models we are helping ourselves
in the long run. I have little compassion and patience with models who
avoid reading up on things that they should know simply because they are
part of the model scam problem here in Tampa Bay. Stupid models who choose
to be selectively ignorant and reckless in their careers keep model scams
in business, and they are not only victims, but they end up supporting
scams and unethical practices. If models were more responsible and invested
a little time to learn and effort in their careers, the scams will be
curbed and far more models would be saved.
You only get out of any career what you put into it. Avoiding dangers
in the modeling industry really isn’t that difficult. The more that
you know, the better off you are.
The next time that a model comes up to me crying about some model job
bait and switch or that they were scammed, I’m going to ask them
if they bothered to learn about what they were getting into before they
went. If they tell me no, I’m going to tell them that it is their
fault and they deserved what they got.
I strongly recommend that models take time to read from our site and learn
from it. It will give you an advantage in your career over the stupid
models who limit themselves by settling on only being represented by some
model agency. There is so much more out there for models, and this is
our gift to you.
